Oh Alan, this made me cry - I can remember my dad telling me the story of Auntie May and Uncle Tom and thinking how romantic it was. I absolutely ADORED Uncle Tom, for all the reasons in your blog - I was a small, shy child (which will surprise people who know me now!) and loved to sit quietly on his knee listening to all those stories - I remember when I started riding when I was 6 being so excited telling him about it all on the weekly visits with my Dad, cos I knew he understood the way I felt as a child about horses.
I think you're right about Auntie May losing the will to go on after he went - I can remember her taking my dad with her to the spiritualist church after Mum died, and thinking there were two desperately lonely people who'd lost the most important people in their lives, just looking for a sign that one day they'd see them again.
I hope the four of them are together now, watching us telling the world about them and thinking "whats all the fuss about then?"
