Siete Islas
Most people who know me will be aware that in February of 2011 I walked from the North to the South of the island (71.3 km) and in doing so managed to raise some money for charity. I didn’t particularly set out to do this in aid of charity but thought whilst I was doing it I might as well see if I could get some sponsorship.
In total it raised £1305.67 for two charities, Niños del Tercer Mundo – a charity based on the island which funds projects in the third world, and the Rose Road Association – based in the UK, who provide services to severely disabled children and their families. I’m really proud to have been able to help both of these fantastic organizations.
When I got back, quite a few people asked me, “What next” ? Most suggesting Iron Man – not a chance, not for me, I would have considered it but, but there are two big reasons that I couldn’t do it even if I wanted to;
1. I don’t particularly like running, plus after playing squash for a number of years my knees wouldn’t take it.
2. Perhaps more challenging for me; I can barely swim! Read the rest of this entry »
Niños del Tercer Mundo – Christopher David
As a result of my latest and forthcoming ‘expedition’ – walking across, up or around the seven main islands that make up the Canary Islands I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Christopher David. Christopher along with his wife Gill and a number of other prominent Lanzarote residents founded Niños del Tercer Mundo, and is the current Chairman of the charity.
Meeting Christopher was an absolute pleasure. He’s such a lovely man and he and his wife Gill (who sadly passed away last year) have selflessly given their time to help others since retiring to Lanzarote in 1995, having owned a place been regular visitors since the mid-80s. Niños del Tercer Mundo came about after their involvement with a project providing one room schools in Ecuador – and Christopher has not helping people since stopped since… He is not – I am sure he will not mind me saying – a young man, yet still continues to dedicate his time to making the lives of others better. The world would be a much better place if it had more people like Christopher in it! Read the rest of this entry »
Sponsorship for my North to South walk…
If you are here you probably know already I am planning on walking the length of the island on the 4th February 2011, and hoping to raise a bit of money for charity in doing so.
I’m raising money for Niños Tercer del Mundo, and the Rose Road Centre in Southampton. Both of which I feel are extremely worthy causes.
If you wish to sponsor me or contribute to the charities concerned, here’s how you can do so; Read the rest of this entry »
4th February 2011
For a couple of year now I’ve had it in my head that I was going to walk the island from north to south.I measured it by road the other day, and it’s approximately 73km from the port at Orzola to the lighthouse in Playa Blanca.
You know how things are, we say these things and never get around to doing them. I’ve been procrastinating on this one for far too long. So, to stir myself into action, I have decided to use it to hopefully raise a little bit of money for charity. Committing to that forces me to plan for it and name a date.
As you’ve probably guessed by now – the date I’m working towards is the 4th February 2011, which gives me a little time to train for it, and to gain some exposure for my nominated charities;
Niños Tercer del Mundo based here on the island and raising money for children in the third world.
The Rose Road Centre in Southampton who provided a wide range of services to severely disabled children and their families. (A charity suggested by Geoff Holt who, if you remember last year set off from Playa Blanca to become the first quadriplegic to sail unassisted across the Atlantic. Geoff has since become a good friend of ours – I’m a massive fan and wanted to do something to support his work.) Read the rest of this entry »
The birth of an idea…
Somehow I’ve been set down a path since the latter part of last year. And a series of things have brought me to where I am now. The big idea, I’ve mentioned in passing a couple of times.
Only Elle and one of my oldest and closest friends know exactly what I’ve been thinking about.
So what are the things that have led me to it? Read the rest of this entry »
Alan Gandy, NC
I wondered after coming across the author, Alan Gandy, who I wrote about recently – just how many of ‘us’ there are?
So, I’ve decided to see over time. I thought it would be amusing to look up other people who share my name and find out who they are.
To get started I did a quick search on Facebook. The search turned up 12 – so I banged out a message to them to find out. The first and only Alan Gandy to reply so far is someone who has already commented on this site before. Alan Marshall Gandy from North Carolina.
Alan lives in Sanford NC to where he recently moved from Hickory NC, and is originally from Memphis TN. He’s 20 years old and a business major in college. He’s currently working full time for AT&T until college re-starts after the summer. He plays guitar and is also teaching himself to play piano. Read the rest of this entry »
Voyeur Dead
I have a Google alert set on my name just to see what, if anything is being said about me on the Internet. Worth almost anyone doing if you want to protect your reputation. But that’s not what this post is about…
Anyway, on to the point. I’ve been increasingly getting alerts leading to links for a book called Voyeur dead by Alan Gandy. I got curious of course and had a look for it. The book is a photographic horror book about zombies – if the reviews on Amazon are anything to go by it’s pretty good. Read the rest of this entry »
